Flower Power Notecards:

Fresh Artists partnered with the Garden Club of Philadelphia (GCP) and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to exhibit the artwork of 2,254 children from 43 public schools in the 2019 Philadelphia Flower Show. They invited K-12 schools throughout the Philadelphia 5-county region to have children create “a portrait of a Powerful Flower.” A Teaching Gallery of more than 250 full-color, close-up photographs was assembled with contributions from award-winning membersin 7 Garden Club of America clubs and professional photographers from Longwood Gardens, Morris and Scott Arboreta.

With a grant from the GCP, Flower Power is being transformed into an innovative boxed set STEAM Lesson Plan that will be available free to low-income schools throughout the country. It includes the Teaching Gallery of Flowers and a lesson plan and resources to pair the Art and Science teachers, starting with making flower portraits then moving to science class to explore the critical PURPOSE flowers play in the world. This unique educational resource culminates with POLLINATION, the precarious state of pollinators, and a call to action for the children to introduce their families to ways they can help attract and nurture these creatures, so essential for the world’s food chain.
